Reed started his college career at Florida, but after redshirting in 2014, persistent injury issues have sidelined his career. He managed just two games for the Gators in 2016, then transferred to YSU, where he made the Missouri Valley all-newcomer team in 2017. He missed the entire 2018 season before returning for an All-Missouri Valley season in 2019.
2020 will be his seventh year in college after his initial redshirt and two years lost entirely to injury.
In 19 games at Youngstown State, he accumulated 58 total tackles, 25.0 for loss and 17.5 sacks. The majority of his production with the Penguins came last season, including 19 of the tackles for loss and 12.5 of the sacks.
Originally a three-star out of Clearwater (Fla.) Central Catholic, he hails from an area that the Virginia Tech coaching staff has wanted to improve its recruiting returns. All of Florida has been a priority, but the underrated west coast of the state - outside of Tampa and the IMG Academy in Bradenton - is a strong source for undiscovered gems.
Reed joins a line that returns every major contributor, but he could provide a pass-rushing punch that the Hokies otherwise lack. Only linebacker Rayshard Ashby and defensive back Chamarri Conner racked up double-digit tackles for loss in 2019.
