It was not ideal! There are no moral victories in a rivalry game loss, and VT's nearly digging out of a big hole doesn't erase the fact that, well, they didn't finish the job. The silver lining is that it doesn't impact greater season-long goals that much, with an ACC Coastal title unaffected by the loss.
