Virginia Tech fans likely want to see a full-roster, split-squad spring game in Lane Stadium, but they won't have the chance this year. Due to depth issues at a few key positions (and the resulting desire to avoid injury), the April 22 event will be an offense-defense affair.

The Maroon-Orange Spring Game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. Fuente’s plans for the game call for the squad to participate in four 12-minute quarters (running clock). The Orange squad (offense) will be on the home sideline, with the Maroon squad (defense) on the visiting sideline. The quarterbacks, who will be wearing gold jerseys, will not be tackled. Each team will receive one timeout in the last two minutes of each half. Expect a 10-minute intermission.

Special teams will be limited in this setting to reduce the risk of injury. There will be no rush on field goals and extra points. In punting situations, only the punter, snapper and return man will be on the field with the ball being placed where the return man fields the ball. There will be no kickoffs. The ball will be placed automatically at the 35-yard line following scores.

Here’s a breakdown of the scoring system for the spring game – with only one score possible per drive.

Offensive Scoring
Touchdown = 6 points
Extra Point = 1 point
Field Goal = 3 points

Defensive Scoring
Turnovers = 7 points
3 and out = 3 points
Stop = 1 point

The game is not currently scheduled to be televised, but is open for fans who can make their way to campus.
