Commonwealth Clash Canceled

The annual all-sports competition between Virginia Tech and in-state rival Virginia will not be contested due to the academic year's premature end.

From University release:

BLACKSBURG – Virginia529, the official sponsor of the Commonwealth Clash, and participating schools Virginia and Virginia Tech, announced today the 2019-20 all-sports competition between the two schools has been canceled and results will be void for this year.

“The best part of the Commonwealth Clash is allowing all student-athletes to have an impact on the overall champion” stated Scott Ridgely, Chief Marketing Officer for Virginia529. “Without spring sports being represented, we didn’t think it was fair to award a winner this year.”

The most recent competition featured a three-game sweep by the Virginia Tech softball team of its series at Virginia that took place March 6-8. The Hokies outscored the Cavaliers by a 17-0 margin in that series.

There were eight events left to be contested, all with a one-point value per event, when the ACC canceled the remainder of its athletic seasons due to COVID-19.

The Commonwealth Clash encourages a friendly, statewide rivalry between the two schools across all school-sponsored sports with 22 individual event points on the line. The school that accumulates 11.5 points or more has been annually crowned the winner and take home the Commonwealth Clash trophy presented by Virginia529.

Virginia Tech has won the Commonwealth Clash in two of the past three academic years the contest has been held with the Hokies earning wins in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 campaigns.
