Virginia Tech freshman Caleb Farley to miss 2017 season

Caleb Farley has suffered a non-contact injury, and will miss the 2017 season rehabbing his knee, Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente announced today.

Farley, who enrolled in January, was expected to be a factor in the wide receiver rotation in Blacksburg. He spent the Spring bouncing between defensive back and receiver, but the Hokies announced in July that his future would be on offense.

Farley was an incredibly productive high school quarterback for Maiden (N.C.) High School. He completed completed 96 of 147 passes (65.3%) for 1,415 yards (9.6 per attempt), 14 touchdowns, and six interceptions, while also running 169 times for 2,252 yards (13.3 per carry) and 33 touchdowns as a senior. He got his first taste of receiver at the ShrineBowl of the Carolinas, where he impressed from a physical perspective while displaying that he still had to learn technique.

Unfortunately, he'll have plenty of time to learn during the course of this season, while he stays on the bench. The silver lining is that he'll be more polished from the standpoint of game knowledge when he does take the field at his new position. He will also be able to redshirt 2017, preserving four years of on-field eligibility going forward.

The wide receiver position has several talented players, but only a small handful (primarily senior Cam Phillips and redshirt junior CJ Carroll) with significant game experience.
