Virginia Tech 102, MD-Eastern Shore 50

For the second straight night, Virginia Tech jumped out to a huge first-half lead and coasted the rest of the way. The Hokies downed Maryland-Eastern Shore 102-50 in a non-conference game played Tuesday night in front of 8,389 fans at Cassell Coliseum.

With the win, the Hokies improved to 2-0 on the season. Maryland-Eastern Shore, which plays in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, fell to 0-2.

The Hokies jumped out to a 19-1 run in the first 7:04 of the game. Zabian Dowdell scored seven points in the run, and Shawn Harris, seeing significant time because Carlos Dixon picked up two quick fouls, scored six. Tech's defense throttled the Hawks all evening, forcing 10 turnovers in that run. The Hawks ended up committing 35 turnovers in the game.

Maryland-Eastern Shore, though, managed to cut the lead to nine with 10:33 left in the first half on a basket by Carl Pruitt. But the Hokies went on a 30-10 run to close the first half and take a 29-point lead into the locker room.

After the break, Tech head coach Seth Greenberg played his reserves the majority of the time. Every Tech player who dressed played at least 13 minutes, with the exception of two players - and one of those two played nine minutes.

Also, every Tech player scored in the game.

Deron Washington, the 6-foot-7 freshman from New Orleans, paced four Tech players in double figures. Washington scored a game-high 24 points, hitting 10-of-12 from the floor. Five of Washington's baskets came on dunks. He has 11 dunks in two games this season.

Harris finished with 14 points off the bench, hitting 5-of-6 from the floor. As a team, the Hokies shot 51.5 percent for the game, while the Hawks shot just 32.7 percent. Dowdell and center Coleman Collins added 12 points each, and guard Jamon Gordon finished with a game-high nine assists.

Pruitt was the lone Hawk in double figures with 14 points.

"Now we need to move on," Greenberg said. "We've got to be more consistent. But we got a lot of guys a lot of minutes before Thanksgiving and that's very important."

The Hokies return to the court Sunday when they travel to Williamsburg, Va., for their first road game of the season. Tech and William & Mary are slated to tip it off at 2 p.m.
