Tuesday presser transcript: Josh Jackson pre-North Carolina

Virginia Tech starting quarterback Josh Jackson sat down with the media as the Hokies prepare to host North Carolina. See what he had to say here.

On what he did on his Saturday off:

“I went fishing, took a nap, a very long nap, and watched some football. That’s what I did and it was a good weekend. I went fishing at the New River and I did not catch any fish (laughing). I can’t fish with lures, I’m more of a sit on the dock and use a worm type guy. I haven’t gotten that skill yet.”

On self-scouting and what he thinks he did well and not so well the first half of the season:

“The one thing I talked with Coach [Brad] Cornelsen is working on stepping up in the pocket a little bit more and staying in there. Those were the couple things we talked about that I need to work on for the rest of the season.”

On what jumps out to him after looking at North Carolina’s defense on film:

“I would say that they have a good defensive line. They are very talented and don’t run too much, like their calls aren’t too diverse. They just run their defense and react I guess. It will be a good challenge for us and we’re looking forward to it.”

On if it is hard to get-up for a game when the opponent has a 1-6 overall record:

“No, I think we are going to be ready to play them. Yeah, I’ll just leave it at that.”

On the receivers who aren’t starters getting more playing time due to some injuries being a blessing in disguise:

“I think it was good for them, like [Eric] Kumah making some big catches on third down. And then some other young guys like [Kalil] Pimpleton got in for a couple plays. Those guys getting reps and getting used to it will be good. Hopefully we will have both of those guys [Cam Phillips, and C.J. Carroll] back on Saturday, though.”

On if there is a rapport on throwing to a guy you might have to develop:

“I mean, obviously different speeds, different bodies. It’s different throwing to Kumah than it is to Pimpelton with size and everything like that. But we’ve been throwing together since January, so it’s not too much of a change really.”

On what Dalton Keene has improved the most halfway through the season:

“I think he is starting to pick up the offense very well. His position is very tough because of all the many looks you can get, with making sure you are blocking the right guy and blocking him correctly. I think those things he’s done a great job with. And now last week, he had a couple big catches. So, I think he is continuing to grow in all facets.”

On how refreshing the bye week was and the outlook on the rest of the season:

“It was very refreshing and I’m sure everybody is feeling better now. But we now have six conference games left, with all of them being Coastal Division games. So, we are just trying to go out there and win every one of them. But right now, we are all focused on North Carolina.”
