The offer sheet is growing for St. John’s College High (DC) 2017 three-star athlete Tyree Johnson. His third offer came in last week.

Virginia Tech offered Thursday, joining Rutgers and Temple so far. For Johnson, Rivals.com’s No. 2 player in Washington D.C. for the class, it’s a matter of taking each offer as it comes and doing a bit of research as well.

Johnson plans to visit VT next month.

“I really want to see good academics in a school, good coaches, a great, hard-working team with great facilities and especially a great weight room because I like to work out a lot,” Johnson said. “I look for a great weight room, a coaching staff that has my back and helps me get better each and every day.”

For now, Johnson said he isn’t overly familiar with the Hokies, though he has some knowledge of their past success.

“I thought it was a great offer,” Johnson said. “Growing up, I really liked Virginia Tech. Michael Vick went there and that was my favorite player back then. It’s pretty cool to have the offer. I think Virginia Tech is a great school and I’d really like to go there.”

Assistant coach Holmon Wiggins made the offer to Johnson. Wiggins visited St. John’s multiple times in the past month to check on Johnson.

“My first time seeing him is when he came up, but we didn’t really talk then,” Johnson said. “He’s said the coaches were telling him about me on the staff, so they offered me. He seemed like a pretty good dude. He was telling me about the junior day and told me to come up and see the facilities.”

Johnson now plans to visit Virginia Tech Jan. 20 for its junior day. He also tentatively plans to be at Wake Forest that weekend as well and said he could possibly visit North Carolina soon. Johnson’s lone visit so far was to Penn State last fall to see the Nittany Lions take on Rutgers in September.

“I haven’t really gotten a chance to see a lot,” he said. “I really like Penn State. They seemed really cool and open to me. Other than how many people were up there, I wasn’t really surprised by anything.”

But Johnson has time. That will also allow him to get a better feel of how each school would use him on the field.

“I really wanna play D-end, but at first, everybody recruited me as an outside linebacker,” Johnson said. “When they saw my body recently, I got stronger, so they wanted me to play defensive end. I feel more comfortable, but I can play linebacker as well and have a strong impact.”
