Three Showing Black Most Love

He still has two and a half more years of high school. Already, Concord (NC) 2018 four-star point guard Rechon Black has become one of the most sought after players in the country.

Black has eight early offers, including from Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Clemson, as well as interest from countless others. Black hasn’t seriously delved into his recruitment, but he’s taking in the interest he’s received and has a few schools that have especially caught his attention.

Black, No. 15 in the 2018 Rivals150, has also been careful to keep an eye on a handful of characteristics he wants to find in a school.

“It’s just the best fit for me and my family,” Black said. “I wanna have the right coaching staff, the right people around me. Of course, minutes will be a factor and a winning program.”

This early in the process, Black doesn’t claim any favorites. Three schools, however, have stood out a bit in how they’ve recruited him.

“I have like 20-25 schools interested,” Black said. “It’s still early, but then again it’s not. I have a lot of schools, but it’s still early, with my sophomore year. They all are big, just because they offered really early. Ohio State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech are all showing the most love.”

Coach Buzz Williams was on hand Thursday to watch Black and show more love, which Black was plenty aware of. Black has also been fond of Williams’ overall approach.

“He came to a couple of games and practices,” Black said. “He’s had a couple of school visits. He’s showing love to my mom, staying around and popping his head in for games. He’s been great. He’s a great guy, a real cool guy, real down to earth. I don’t really know how to explain it. He’s the cool guy, fun guy to be around. It’s not just about basketball, whether it’s about grades, your character off the court.”

Black has gotten to know Williams, assistant coach Isaac Chew and the Hokies more on visits to Blacksburg. Black first visited for a football game during the 2014 season.

“I love it there,” he said. “It’s a beautiful place, beautiful school. I like the campus. They’ve shown love since day one. They’re the reason I’m blowing up, really, since my freshman year, when I went to campus on an unofficial. I played with the team and they’ve shown me and my family a lot of love.”

The love has continued from Ohio State and North Carolina in much the same ways. Black has yet to visit the Buckeyes, but already attended Tar Heels games this season against Davidson and Georgia Tech.

“They’ve all been popping in and out, keeping in touch with me,” Black said. “They can’t really talk to me, but they’ve all been trying staying in touch with me, like my grades and stuff like that. They’ve been coming to my games and stuff.”

Black has also been to Wake Forest this season and hopes to get to Virginia Tech at some point over the next couple of months for a game as well.

In the meantime, Black hopes to build on what he’s accomplished. And that could push him to a fifth star in the Rivals.com rankings.

“I think my strong point is being a good point guard and still growing,” Black said. “I’ve grown two or three more inches. Everyone tells me I’m versatile, pass the ball, rebound and I’m the team leader this year. I think I average a triple double this year. Everything you can work on. There’s always room for improvement.”
