The Hokies will be down one Edmunds brother for the remainder of the 2017 season. Safety Terrell Edmunds had shoulder surgery that will keep him out of the final three games. Edmunds's 2017 season ends with 59 total tackles, 2.5 for loss with 1.5 sacks. He also has two interceptions, four pass breakups, and one quarterback hurry.

Edmunds is a redshirt junior, so the surgical procedure should allow him to be ready for his fifth year of college eligibility - or perhaps heal in time to prepare for the NFL Draft should he decide to forgo that final season in college. Both he and younger brother Tremaine are considered serious NFL prospects.

Fuente and defensive coordinator Bud Foster have hinted at Edmunds's injury in recent weeks, but now the severity of it - and the fact that it will keep Edmunds off the field - is known.

Redshirt freshman Khalil Ladler is listed as Edmunds's backup at the free safety position, while true frosh Devon Hunter is the No. 2 at the other safety position. However, fifth-year senior Deon Newsome, who is listed at the backup at the Whip linebacker position, is likely to step into the starting lineup while classmate Anthony Shegog becomes the No. 2 (where he's played over Newsome already).

Edmunds is the second VT safety to suffer a season-ending injury, after redshirt freshman Divine Deablo broke his foot against Old Dominion.
