Recruitment story

When Virginia Tech missed on top quarterback targets Justin Fields and DaKereon Joyner last Winter, it seemed like they might have to go back to the drawing board... but the way things played out, Patterson hadn't been far from the top of their board all along. He took an unofficial visit to campus with his high school coaches, and Virginia Tech became the immediate favorite. Within a week, he picked VT over Wisconsin and Illinois, and he never wavered even when more offers came in.

Game breakdown

Patterson is an elite athlete from the quarterback position. Not only is he big and fast, he has a natural knack for finding his way up the field and breaking tackles. Where he needs work is the passing game. He had refined his motion a bit over the Summer, but reverted to extremely poor technique this season, and his accuracy struggled. Fortunately, the threat of his legs often meant he was throwing to wide-open guys in a relatively simple offense. He'll have to work on his technique and learn a more complex playbook before he's ready to contribute, but a couple years of seasoning should put him in position to be an outstanding passer as an upperclassman.

Statistically speaking

Solorio finished 9-4. Patterson passed for 1030 yards and 14 touchdowns and run for 1,170 and another 20 scores. He also added 11 tackles (one for loss) and two interceptions defensively and punts for his squad.
