Recruitment story

Penn State was the major player for Rivers from the opening stages of his recruitment. Virginia Tech did get involved prior to his junior year, but he still was a more consistent presence in State College than he was in Blacksburg. He committed on a visit to PSU for their game against Michigan in Fall 2015. He looked solid as can be with the Nittany Lions until early in his senior year.

Things began trending back to Virginia Tech during the course of this Fall. He took a couple game visits to VT, and the coaching staff began to feel like they not only had a shot, but were a near-guarantee to flip him. He took an official visit along with many of the Hokies' commitments in early December and that impression only increased.

Rivers took his official visit to Penn State while still committed to the Nittany Lions a couple weekends ago, but used his time on campus to not reaffirm his commitment, but rather let James Franklin and Co. know that he'd be decommitting and flipping to Vt, which he did later that afternoon.

Statistically speaking

Rivers made 102 tackles - 13 of them for loss - during his senior year for Stephens City (Va.) Sherando. He also plays tight end, and caught 21 balls for 346 yards (16.5 per reception) and seven touchdowns.
