Jacksonville (Fla.) Ed White running back Caleb Steward may not be the most exciting signee from a star perspective. However, he can have an important role in Blacksburg.

The 5-11, 195-pounder signed this morning, and will be an early enrollee in Blacksburg in just a couple weeks' time.

Bowling Green, Colorado State, East Carolina, Mercer, Southern Miss, South Florida, Temple, Troy

Recruitment story

Steward picked up a Virginia Tech offer in the Spring, and the Hokies were always (by far) the biggest name on his list. He didn't extend the drama, announcing on Twitter on the Fourth of July. No other schools pursued after his commitment, and he'll enroll at VT in January.

Game breakdown

Steward is slight but speedy, a kid who excels getting the ball in space and running by kids (something his high school team unfortunately didn't afford him the opportunity to do). He's going to have to bulk up in a big way to be an every-down back at Virginia Tech, and his speed and shiftiness are going to have to carry him until then. Neither is elite for the college level, but there can be a role for a player like him.

Statistically speaking

White finished 3-7. Steward ran 171 times for 851 yards (5.0 per carry) and seven touchdowns, and caught five passes for 16 yards (3.2 per reception). He lost two fumbles.
