Recruitment story

Chatman long seemed to lean to Virginia Tech, but a sometimes-rocky relationship between VT and his high school program cast some doubt into that. The Hokies were able to overcome it, and reeled him in over the Summer. The sales pitch of an opportunity to play on either side of the ball was a key, and Maryland was left in the dust.

Game breakdown

Chatman started his career primarily as a wide receiver, made the transition to both receiver and corner as a junior, and played primarily on defense as a senior - though his explosion also served the Crusader offense, with plenty of huge passing plays. His pure athleticism and versatility are the name of his game. He's a smaller guy and needs to develop more of a physical edge as a tackler, but the man coverage concepts he's learned should be able to blossom under coaching at VT.

Statistically speaking

Bishop Sullivan finished 6-5. In eight games, Chatman had 28 receptions for 647 yards (23.1 per grab) and 11 touchdowns. He had 23 yards in kickoff returns and 49 rush yards, plus three pass breakups. He also had two tackles for loss (including a safety) and two interception returns for touchdown.
