An ugly win might not quite describe Virginia Tech's 29-21 triple-overtime victory over Marshall yesterday.
With rain throughout the game, a heavy downpour during the three overtimes, a seven-point halftime deficit, the loss of a starting kicker and mistakes on both sides of the ball, the Hokies had plenty to overcome. But unlike many times last year, this time they got a few bounces.
Junior wide receiver Willie Byrnhauled in the game-tying touchdown pass after a tipped pass. And Beamer Ball returned with a blocked punt for a touchdown and a blocked field goal in the first overtime that kept the Hokies alive.
"I give our players a lot of credit, they just kept working," coach Frank Beamer said after the game. "We became a better football team today. When kinds hang in there together and find a way to get it done, that builds chemistry and trust and makes you a better football team. That's important with as many young guys as we have."
