Last season, what's typically been a formidable special teams for Virginia Tech was virtually nonexistent. The Hokies didn't score any return touchdowns, while averaging just 4.4 yards on punt returns.
Redshirt freshman Deon Newsome hopes he can provide some much-needed punch for Virginia Tech's special teams, as well as the offense. He showed a glimpse of his abilities during the Hokies' spring game Saturday, but Newsome is hoping to do even more to resuscitate the return game.
"I just think we haven't been working on the return game like that," Newsome said. "But I plan to come and restore it. Y'all have seen that I've put a little more work into it. I know, once I get the ball I can pretty well do something with it."
As a kick returner, Newsome had two returns, one for 19 yards in the spring game. And he has the mentality that could allow him to be even more explosive.
"You've gotta be fearless," Newsome said. "You've got guys coming full speed at you. You've just gotta block all that out and focus on scoring."
As a receiver, Newsome had just one catch, for 18 yards Saturday. But overall, with his speed and elusiveness, he could be a weapon the Hokies have been missing.
"It makes me feel like we have a better opportunity," Newsome said. "We have something to prove. It makes it seem like we've gotta step it up this upcoming season."
