Last season, assistant coach Aaron Moorehead was just hoping to have enough quality receivers to get in a game. This fall, he can pick and choose a little bit.
Freshmen Isaiah Ford and Cameron Phillips have been two of the most talked about players during fall camp. Each has had a learning curve to make, but they've also put themselves in position with their play to make quick impacts on the field.
Neither has earned a spot to avoid a redshirt, but both Ford and Phillips have given Moorehead and the Virginia Tech offensive staff plenty to mull over.
"It's kinda up to us to see how their skill set fits exactly what we're doing and they're doing a good job," Moorehead said. "The one thing, I joked yesterday, is the guys, as soon as we gave them a little credit on Saturday, they both went out on Sunday and had just about an average day. I just told them, let's stop reading the newspapers, let's stop reading Twitter, let's just go out and play football. (Tuesday) was a better day for those guys. They're great football players and I'm really excited they're part of our group."
Moorehead is also benefiting from a nearly fully healthy group after junior Demitri Knowles returned to practice this week. Knowles suffered a sprained right ankle just before camp. His addition, plus the play of Ford and Phillips gives Moorehead a much easier decision of who to play in just over two weeks for the season-opener against William & Mary.
"You always say you'd like to play six," Moorehead said. "Five to six guys is what you'd like to have. I don't think you wanna go into the gameplan not being able to count on five or six guys because injuries happen and you want those guys to be able to go out there and function, but I'd love to have six. I think it keeps the room involved, everybody has a little role and where those people fit is kinda up to us. This year, with the two young guys, plus the older guys, it's probably gonna be six and that's a good thing."
