Mondo Walker watches his brother and the Hokies
Defensive tackle Ricky Walker has been one of VT's most important players this year, and younger brother Mondo is a 2018 prospect. The 5-11, 185-pounder doesn't have the size of Ricky, but has shown enough on the field at Bethel (Va.) High and now Virginia Beach Bishop Sullivan to pick up offers from Army, FAU, and a number of FCS programs.
He's continuing to build buzz on the trail, and could see that offer list grow.
"I'm currently hearing from SMU, Wake Forest, North Carolina, and James Madison," he said.
With Ricky currently a redshirt junior at Virginia Tech and another older brother, Rijo, who graduated from UVa, there's a strong connection to both in-state ACC schools. He strengthened the bond with the Hokies when he made the trip across the state to see them take on Old Dominion.
He liked what he saw in the 38-0 victory.
"We were a little late getting up there," he said. "We got there about an hour prior to kickoff, so as soon as we got there, we just went to the sideline for the pregame warm ups. The best part of the trip was the game atmosphere. It's one of the best I've ever witnessed - probably the best I've seen besides when I went to Penn State."
The late arrival meant he didn't get the chance to sit down with the VT coaches before they kicked off against the Monarchs. However, he made up for lost time after the final whistle sounded. He sat down with running backs coach Zohn Burden, defensive line coach Charley Wiles, and safeties coach Galen Scott.
"After the game, I talked to coaches Burden, Wiles, and Scott," he said. "Coach Wiles was at my game the night before and he told me how I played well and things like that. Coach Scott and Coach Burden were just asking me how things are on my end this season and recruiting-wise."
Walker plans to expand his travels this Fall, including a couple of nationally known Power-5 programs. However, even if it's primarily to see his brother play, he'll also return to Blacksburg for another Hokies game.
"I plan on heading to a Tennessee and Ohio State game this season," he said. "I'm 100% sure I'll catch another VT game, whether it's a recruiting thing or just to see my brother Ricky play with the rest of my family."
