Losing a former all-ACC punter, it was clear that Virginia Tech needed a replacement. And now, the Hokies hope they have one.

Virginia Tech picked up a full scholarship commitment Thursday night from South Rowan (NC) punter Marshall Long. He participated Saturday in the Army All-American game in San Antonio.

Long becomes commitment No. 18 in the Hokies' 2016 recruiting class. He chose them over offers from Army and The Citadel and a walk-on offer from Georgia.

Long was recruited initially by former assistant coach Shane Beamer. But since the arrival of coach Justin Fuente, Long's primary recruiter has been special teams coordinator James Shibest.

"One thing that I really liked was the fan base," Long said. "They have one of the best fan bases in the nation. That’s one of the main reasons and the new coaching staff, the new special teams coach. He's been good to me. I can see myself playing there the next four years."
