Harrisonburg, Va. offensive lineman Wes Lokey has helped lead his team to an 8-1 record in 2004 going into the regular season finale versus Waynesboro this weekend. Harrisonburg is poised to find themselves in a rematch with Liberty (Bealeton), a team they fell to 17-10 in the first round of last year’s playoffs.

Lokey is still awaiting his first offer, but maintains contact with a number of the big boys as well as a host of 1-AA schools.
“I’ll be going down to Richmond this weekend to check them out. I’ve already been to Delaware, Randolph-Macon, and James Madison,” admitted Lokey. “I haven’t heard from Coach Ball at Virginia Tech in a little while, but I’m still interested in their program. I’d like to get down there for a visit.”
Lokey was close to receiving a scholarship offer from Vanderbilt, but saw the offer fall through due to academic standards.
“Vanderbilt told us they would have a hard time getting him in with his academic record,” explained Joe Lokey, Wes’s father. “Don’t get me wrong, Wes is in fine shape academically, but Vanderbilt has very high standards in comparison to most schools. They were very excited about his talents on the football field though.”
Lokey played his sophomore and junior years along the defensive line, but has focused his senior season on offense.
“I’m really open to playing either position in college,” stated Lokey. “My coach and I agree though, that my future will probably be on offense.”
Wes’s father Joe added that along with his size (currently 6-foot-3, 285-pounds) most coaches are most impressed with his hands and his footwork.
Besides waiting on an offer at this point, what is Lokey looking for in a college?
“I want to go to a school with a good academic program. I’m looking hard a graduation rates,” said Lokey. “I’m looking for a school that has a good program in either of two fields, kinesiology or mechanical engineering. I’m also just looking for a home for the next four or five years.”
While the recruiting season is just winding down for some of the top names in the country as they narrow their lists, the recruiting season is just beginning for many players like Lokey as roster spots need to be filled. HokieHaven.com will continue to monitor Lokey’s recruitment as well as many other regional prospects. As the college regular season comes to a close in the next few weeks, recruiting will take center stage once again leading up to the start of the bowl season and beyond.
