The decision shouldn't come as much of a surprise. But now, it's official.
During a timeout at the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, Hillsborough (Fla.) four-star quarterback Dwayne Lawson announced his commitment to Virginia Tech. Lawson is the only quarterback the Hokies will be taking in their 2015 class. He's also commitment No. 23 for the class and the eighth with four-stars from Rivals.com.
Lawson, Rivals.com's No. 16 dual-threat quarterback and No. 56 player in Florida for the 2015 class, chose Virginia Tech over his other finalists, Miami and South Florida. Lawson originally committed to the Hurricanes last spring, but decommitted on Dec. 18.
Lawson, who was recruited by offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler, has been leaning towards the Hokies for over a month now. Under the radar, he officially visited Virginia Tech Nov. 28 for the regular season-finale against Virginia.
A planned agri-business major, Lawson hasn't been shy on his affinity for the Hokies.
"I made up my mind probably a week after I decommitted from Miami," Lawson told Rivals.com at the Semper Fi game. "Even before that, I knew what school I wanted to go to. I knew what school had the best opportunity for me and I'm excited about this opportunity."
Lawson doesn't plan on enrolling at Virginia Tech until later this summer, but has been told by Loeffler and the Hokies that he'll have an immediate chance to compete. He'll be in the mix with the incumbent starter and senior-to-be Michael Brewer, junior-to-be Brenden Motley and soon-to-be redshirt freshmen Chris Durkin and Andrew Ford.
