At long last, he's in: Big Stone Gap (Va.) Union 2018 tight end James Mitchell committed to Virginia Tech this afternoon.

The four-star announced his decision in a ceremony at his high school, picking VT over Duke and Georgia. South Carolina and Tennessee were among the other programs he turned down along the way.

The 6-4, 210-pound Mitchell is commitment No. 24 for Virginia Tech, and the seventh four-star player in the Class of 2018. With his pledge, VT climbs to the No. 13 recruiting class in the nation, hot on the heels of No. 12 Washington.

Mitchell is the No. 13 tight end in the nation and the No. 6 overall prospect in Virginia. He joins four other Virginians in the class (plus Fork Union post-grad Christian Darrisaw, originally from Maryland) in the class, and is the second-highest ranked among them, behind athlete Armani Chatman.

The Hokies plan to sign about 25 or 26 prospects in the class, so Mitchell's commitment brings them very close to a full group.
