Hokies in final group for Nikolas Bonitto

In something of a surprise, Virginia Tech has made the final seven for Rivals250 defensive end Nik Bonitto:

Alabama, Louisville, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Penn State are also in the hunt for the nation's No. 233 overall prospect and No. 10 weakside defensive end. Recognized early as one of the top players in the class, he had offers from just about every bigtime program at one point or another, and eliminated schools like Florida State, LSU, and Ohio State in this trim.

Virginia Tech's inclusion is a surprise for the product of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas because he not only hasn't visited Blacksburg, but hadn't even previously publicized that the Hokies had offered him. Getting the 6-4, 200-pounder on campus this Fall could keep the relationship going in a major way.

Space is getting tight in the 2018 recruiting class for Virginia Tech, but at least one slot is earmarked for a pass-rushing defensive end. While the top priority is five-star North Carolinian KJ Henry, options on the ground have been light behind him. Bonitto could be a nice piece on his own, or a backup plan if Henry chooses one of his other options.
