Hokies drop four spots in both national polls

Virginia Tech has learned the damage from its big loss to Miami last night, and it comes in the form of a drop to No. 17 in both national polls. With the afternoon window providing an opportunity to move comfortably into the top 10 (Ohio State, Penn State, and Oklahoma State all lost, while Miami would have in that scenario as well), VT's failure to muster much resistance to the Canes instead means a move down.

Clemson (No. 4 in both), Miami (7 AP, 6 Coaches), and NC State (No. 24 Coaches) wrap up ACC representation in the polls. VT will not play NC State - a potential ACC Championship matchup was the only possibility, but both teams spoiled that Saturday - and lost 31-17 to Clemson at home Sept. 30 and 28-10 to Miami last night.

After an upset win over previously top-15 Iowa State, season-opening opponent West Virginia re-entered the AP poll at No. 23, and is one spot away from being ranked in the Coaches' poll.

The Hokies' next three opponents (Georgia Tech, Pitt, and Virginia) are a combined 14-12 and none of them is likely to make their way into the poll this season, so the Hokies have played every ranked team they will see until a bowl game.
