Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams has a history of developing junior college players and sending them to the NBA. At Marquette, Williams sent former Big East Player of the Year Jae Crowder, Jimmy Butler and Darius Johnson-Odom to the next level.
Now, Williams has his first JUCO player with the Hokies.
Georgia Perimeter Community College forward Shane Henry committed to Virginia Tech tonight, after officially visiting Blacksburg Thursday through Saturday. Henry also had offers from Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech, as well as looks from Auburn, Arkansas and others. Henry received the Hokies offer at the end of his visit.
"I really love the campus and the atmosphere," Henry said. "In a way, I was waiting on that offer."
Henry will have two seasons of eligibility remaining, but won't arrive on campus until August. This summer, he's finishing up his academics at Georgia Perimeter College, to attain his associate's degree. Henry will also have a redshirt season available.
Henry averaged 13 points and 12 rebounds per game last season. His 363 total rebounds last season ranked sixth in the NJCAA and his 136 total blocks ranked third.
The Hokies have now wrapped up their 2014 recruiting class which also includes four-star forward Ahmed Hill, No. 63 in the Rivals150, three-star guard Justin Bibbs, No. 143 in the Rivals150, three-star guard Jalen Hudson and three-star center Satchel Pierce.
