Hokie Spring Game Less Than Desired

Though the Orange team had all the first team players, they didn't need a 13-point deficit in Saturday's Virginia Tech spring game.
All the Orange team could muster was a safety and a third quarter touchdown. In the process, quarterback Logan Thomas threw three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.
The on-field results weren't great for the Hokies, but afterward, the players weren't overly worried. They had 132 days until the season-opener against Alabama and now had a better idea of what they need to spend their summer correcting.
"I thought it was gonna be cake work, honestly but they came out there and they played well," defensive end James Gayle said. "We kinda just had too much to overcome. I don't think if they didn't score the two touchdowns, we still would have lost."
The running backs looked similar to some of their performances last season. Michael Holmes, Trey Edmunds and J.C. Coleman combined for 34 yards, but Holmes was still encouraged. Of course, that was before Holmes was arrested Saturday night for his role in a fight and charged with felony malicious wounding and two misdemeanor assault and battery charges. He's waiting to be arraigned and Virginia Tech announced this morning that Holmes has been indefinitely suspended according to university policy.
"I played last year, so I've been trying to get all the young bucks together, keep them working hard," he said Saturday night. "The thing we're going to work on the most is being consistent. Just grinding, putting in work, trying to get better."
Thomas wasn't thrilled with his performance, but he's still getting accustomed to offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler and the Hokies' new offense.
"All of y'all are gonna say and people are gonna say that I had a bad day today," Thomas said. "But I can't complain with how I played. I threw the ball where I wanted to, I hit my spots and I was accurate, so I really couldn't complain in that area. My mechanics have gotten better, my accuracy has gotten better and that's all I can ask for in learning the playbook. I'm excited to go into this summer and work with these guys and get them better, get me better and we'll be better in the fall."
