Hokie opponent watch and rooting guide: Week seven

With a win over BC in the books and a bye upcoming for the Hokies, fans can relax Saturday and watch the out-of-town scoreboard.

As always, our rooting interests are as follows: we want teams on the schedule to beat teams that aren't on the schedule, so the Hokies play the toughest slate possible (and get the credit for it at the end of the season). Intra-conference games in the ACC get a little more complicated, and we break them down when relevant. Out-of-conference results that help VT - mostly in terms of the opportunity to move up the national rankings - are also important.

Who will you be rooting for this week? Talk about it on our premium message board, The Gobbler.

The Hokies

Virginia Tech 23, Boston College 10

The offense didn't snap out of its funk, but the Lunch Pail Defense dominated Boston College outside of a trick play-aided drive. VT showed that, even on the road, they'll be able to shut down all but the most potent attacks. The BC defense hasn't been having a good year, though, and it limited Virginia Tech way more than you'd like to see.

This week: Bye

An off week to heal up (wide receivers Cam Phillips and CJ Carroll and running back Steven Peoples are among the wounded), fine-tune the offense, and improve technique comes at jut the right time for Virginia Tech. A step forward for the O-line in particular would be welcome indeed.
