Goodson feeling close to a VT offer

Virginia Tech has put plenty of effort into recruiting the Atlanta area since the arrival of the current coaching staff, and Suwanee (Ga.) North Gwinnett athlete Tyler Goodson could keep that trend going in the 2019 class.

He doesn't yet hold an offer from the Hokies, but the 5-10, 185-pound Goodson took an unofficial visit to Blacksburg yesterday to see what Virginia Tech is all about. He certainly liked what he saw.

"It was awesome," he said. "The coaches already knew about me, but they also pointed out that it was a great fit in the scheme they're running, and they're looking for players with my style of play. [They said] I'm a mismatch in space, I have good lateral quickness, great vision, and can take it to the house."

The Hokies' area recruiter for Georgia is offensive line coach Vance Vice. Under his watch, Virginia Tech has added the likes of offensive lineman Patrick Kearns and defensive end Emmanuel Belmar (2016), running back Jalen Holston, linebacker Jaylen Griffin, and offensive lineman Lecitus Smith (2017), and offensive lineman John Harris (2018) in the past three years alone. The trend should continue into 2019, and Goodson could ultimately be a part of it.

First, though, he has to pick up his offer from the Hokies. During his conversations with Vice, things certainly sounded promising.

"We had a very good talk with the entire staff," he said. "Coach Vice will be coming back down to see me. I'm expecting the offer."

Should that come through, it certainly seems reasonable to expect that Virginia Tech would be right at the top of his list.

Appalachian State, Marshall, and Southern Miss are the three programs that have offers on the table for Goodson at this point. If and when the Hokies pull the trigger, they certainly won't be the last to do so as well for this rising prospect.
