Drilling down: Can Grant Wells still be The Guy for VT?
Welcome to our new preseason series, wherein we look at the biggest question mark for each position group in granular depth.
We begin with quarterback, where senior Grant Wells is a returning starter... but perhaps not a popular one. Can the Marshall transfer fend off an even newer Hokie arrival (Baylor transfer Kyron Drones, in his first year in Blacksburg) to retain the starting role?

The case against Grant Wells is not confusing: His 117.5 passer rating was the worst by a Hokie starter since 2015. With Wells at the helm, the Hokies finished with the No. 103 (yards/game) or No. 106 (yards/attempt) passing offense, depending on how you want to slice it.
There's no question that Grant Wells did not have a good first season at Virginia Tech. But is a reclamation project possible?
