The journey has been a bit longer for redshirt freshman defensive end Seth Dooley to get to this point, but it could be a well worthwhile one.
After signing with Virginia Tech in 2012, Dooley grayshirted, both to work on his size and his grades. He redshirted again last fall, but since his arrival, he's gained nearly 20 pounds and worked more on a few specific areas of his game.
Dooley isn't quite ready to take center stage as a starter this season, but with his ramped up play, he's put himself in position to be a solid contributor.
"Pass-rushing, I feel like I've gotten better," Dooley said. "It's just the technique on that, also and going from speed to power. I used to try just speed, speed, speed. Now, I'm using more and listening to Coach and not running by the quarterback, going the quarterback's depth and working inside or powering inside. That's helped out a lot."
After Saturday's closed scrimmage, defensive coordinator Bud Foster singled Dooley out as the one player he was most pleased with and that he'd made great strides. But Dooley is still making more.
"I'm comfortable with where I am right now, but you always wanna strive for more," he said. "I'm not satisfied, but I'll do whatever my position needs on this team."
