Davis Gets Chance With Giants

With about 10 picks remaining in the seventh and final round of the NFL Draft yesterday, former Virginia Tech wide receiver

But around that time, Davis got some assurance. He received a call from the scouting director of the New York Giants, who said they wanted to sign Davis if he wasn't selected.

Davis wasn't selected and five minutes after the draft ended, he was on the phone again with the Giants, whom he signed with later last night. Davis was a bit surprised he wasn't selected in the draft, but the bigger surprise is that the team showing the most interest was the Giants. Now, Davis is looking to make the most of his opportunity.

"Before this, I hadn't heard anything from them," Davis said. "I didn't even know I was on their radar or a prospect for them. It kinda surprised me when I got the call from them. It wasn't anything I was expecting, but at the same time, things like this always happen, so I'm pretty blessed to be in this situation and it's something that I look forward to going forward and having a future with."

New York didn't select a wide receiver with any of its seven picks, giving Davis an even better window at earning a roster spot. He'll now report to the Giants' May 9 mini-camp.

"My agent took over from there and he handled everything with the Giants and the staff and all that," Davis said. "He said I should be receiving a call from the coaching staff either today or tomorrow to let me know everything else. As far as contract-wise, that's already handled, so the only thing left for me to do is go an report and do what I can do."

With New York, Davis will join former Virginia Tech running back

"It's gonna be a great feeling and it's also gonna make it a little more comfortable just because you get up there in an unfamiliar place, but at the same time, you know people," Davis said. "It won't be as unfamiliar as if I was going somewhere with nobody on the team that I knew. At the same time, you can't really look at that. It's gonna be a great chance and I know those guys are gonna look out after us, especially us being rookies. It's someone to look up to, someone to call and talk to if you need somebody. Going in with Tweedy at the same time, it's something to work towards, making the team and the 63-man roster."

Davis played in all 13 games last fall for the Hokies, starting in 10 and finishing with 51 catches for 953 yards and five touchdowns. He was also an honorable coaches all-ACC selection, coming up just 10 yards short of the school single-season receiving yards record.

But Davis drew the most attention for what he didn't do in a 28-22 loss to Florida State in November. He was singled out in highlight videos online for not blocking and did not play in the first half of the following game.

Still, Davis has done enough to impress the Giants, who will give him a chance.

"I just need to be more consistent," Davis said. "I showed with my combine and my pro day that I've corrected little things in my routes and that's not gonna stop. I'm gonna continue to work on those things. But my biggest thing is just be more consistent and go out and do the same thing every time, be someone they can count on in situations and show that even though I'm a rookie, just have a mindset of someone who's already been in certain situations and little things."

It's moving on for Davis, who's making the most of his chance, even if it was a surprise.
