On the field, Virginia Tech had a rough day, with a 28-21 upset loss to East Carolina. But the day wasn't all so bad.
After the game and just before leaving on an unofficial visit, Veterans (Ga.) 2016 Rivals250 quarterback Logan Byrd gave the Hokies his commitment. He becomes their first pledge for the class of 2016.
"For me, it was all about the coaches that I was gonna spend four years of college with," Byrd said. "Frank Beamer is a legend and who wouldn't wanna play for him."
Byrd's visit today was his third to Blacksburg in six weeks. The No. 240 player in the 2016 Rivals250 and No. 9 dual-threat quarterback for the class, Byrd said he chose Virginia Tech over offers from Duke and North Carolina. He also had offers from Illinois, Minnesota, NC State, Virginia, Marshall and Charlotte.
The Hokies also have a 2016 grayshirt commitment from First a Assembly Christian School (NC) wide receiver Conner O'Donnell. But Rivals.com does not count commitments of players who commit to a grayshirt offer.
