Beamer Sees Work In Progress

Defensively, it was about as good a start as coach Frank Beamer could hope for in Virginia Tech's 45-3 win today over Western Carolina. On the Catamounts' first play from scrimmage, redshirt freshman cornerback Brandon Facyson came up with an interception.
Offensively, it was a bit slow, before finally coming around. The Hokies went three and out after the interception and had just a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Virginia Tech got rolling more after that, adding to a 21-0 halftime lead with three more touchdowns in the second half.
"Well, our outlook is just to get better as the day goes on," Beamer said. "We wanted to make the third quarter our best quarter and I think we probably did that. Again, I think we really took another step. We're really just trying to get better and make sure we don't make the same mistakes the next week. I like the attitude that this football team has. I like the way we practice, I like our attitude. Sometimes, we're just not very pretty to look at, but we're going to get prettier as the year goes on."
A few parts of the Hokies did look pretty. They ran for four touchdowns on the ground and quarterback Logan Thomas threw his first touchdown pass of the season, an 18-yard pass to senior wide receiver D.J. Coles.
Junior Detrick Bonner also made a pair of interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. For one game at least, there were a few mistakes, but the positives outweighed the negatives.
"We've had a bunch of them around here and I hope it's the first of many this year," Beamer said. "We're going to keep working on our kicking game to get some blocks and get some returns. Usually, when we're scoring a lot, it's not just our offense. It's our defense and our special teams that are doing it too, so that's something we're going to be working on improving."
