Florida, Georgetown, Harvard, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, and Yale are also still alive for the 6-5, 180-pounder. Clemson, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, and Texas A&M are among the programs that had offered but are no longer being considered. While he's started to research Virginia Tech, it's clear he wants to learn more.

"I know it’s in the ACC and it’s top notch competition," he told Evans over the weekend. "I know a little about their academics and it’s really good."

The Hokies may be behind a couple of the other contenders, notably home-state South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Nesmith would like to make a commitment during September if he feels ready, so the Hokies will need to make up ground quickly if they want a chance to land him.

VT currently has just one commitment in its 2018 class, three-star guard Jarren McAllister, and will be looking for at least a couple more signees in the group. A wing and a true big - since there wasn't one in the 2017 class - would be ideal.
