Ford Standing Out At VT

Virginia Tech's top wide receiver hasn't even played a down yet in a college game. But his play in fall camp has left little doubt that he could be the playmaker the Hokies have sorely missed the past couple of seasons.

Though only a three-star player out of Trinity Christian HS (Fla.), Isaiah Ford already had a bit of hype entering this fall camp. That came in part because he'd flipped commitments from Louisville to Virginia Tech and because he finished his high school career with a state championship.

Ford also made a name for himself as a dual-sport athlete. And though football is his focus now, Ford plans to again play basketball, once the football season is over.

But with four catches for 94 yards and three touchdowns in the Hokies' scrimmage on Friday, Ford's focus now is on the coming football season.

"From the first day we put on pads, it was a transition," Ford said. "I had to get used to the physicality and everyone being bigger than at the high school level. But I feel like I transitioned pretty well. Then, I just got used to doing the things I've been doing my whole life, trying to make plays and attacking the ball."

Basketball still has been on Ford's mind. On Ford's first day on campus in July, he and his mother met with Virginia Tech basketball coach Buzz Williams, who told him the offer to play still stood, when coach Frank Beamer was done with him for football. And if all goes according to plan, Ford will be on the basketball court in January.

"It'll be tough, I know it'll be tough," Ford said. "It's always a little rough transition when you go from football to basketball. But I've been doing it my whole life and it's the only thing I know."
