Today's scrimmage came two days later than originally planned, but for Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, it might have turned out better that way.
The Hokies had planned to hold a scrimmage Wednesday, as well as one tomorrow. Instead, for various reasons, the scrimmages were combined into one this afternoon. But even in one less scrimmage, Beamer saw plenty.
He saw freshman running back Marshawn Williams, who's been working his way back from hernia surgery last month, run for 54 yards. Beamer saw his quarterback competition come even closer to fruition in naming a starter, an announcement that could come any day. And perhaps most importantly, he saw freshman wide receiver Isaiah Ford move closer not only to play this season, but starting, after he hauled in four catches for 94 yards and three touchdowns.
Ford is currently listed as Virginia Tech's No. 1 receiver and has a strong chance or starting in the season-opener next weekend.
"He's definitely a go," Beamer said. "I think that kid's got a lot of ability, level head, good."
Now, Beamer and his staff have a few decisions to make on offense. They have to settle on a quarterback, a kicker, a starting offensive line and how a possible six running backs will be used. The staff will meet tomorrow and could announce a starting quarterback, as well.
"We've done three scrimmages in the pre-season forever," Beamer said. "I always get a little disgusted with that last one or the second one, because it kinda gets a little bit old. Usually, it's the last one. I think this way, the first one is fresh and we had a great scrimmage. This one turned out to be a great scrimmage and they got their legs back under them yesterday. I'm inclined to do things different here in the future."
