OL Working Itself Out

Though the attention with Virginia Tech's offense has been on finding a starting quarterback or even how the running back situation will sort itself out, another has largely been overlooked, though it's just as important.

Assistant coach Stacy Searels and the Hokies still haven't nailed down a starting five of offensive linemen, much less a rotation. There's a few mainstays, like senior center Caleb Farris and sophomore guard Augie Conte, but the rest are still sorting themselves out.

That doesn't mean Searels isn't getting a better idea of what he has to work with.

"You've got quite a few guys, Augie's been consistent all camp," Searels said. "Caleb and David (Wang) have both done a good job in there, Wyatt (Teller)'s gotten a lot of work in there and Alston Smith. You've got plenty of bodies to get it done, it's just who's gonna be the most consistent?"

Searels said he's hoping more will sort itself out at today's scrimmage. It'll be Virginia Tech's final scrimmage before game-week preparations next week. For now, he calls the offensive line 'fluid.'

"That's what you wanna see, when the lights are on, to compete and play fast," Searels said. "The last scrimmage we had, I was really pleased with the way the guys competed. They played with effort, they played with toughness and when we were on that field, they played their tails off, where as some of the days, I wasn't pleased."
