Reavis Not Clowning On Field

As freshman safety C.J. Reavis showed on Virginia Tech's media day Aug. 9, if there's anything for certain about him, it's that he's not shy. Though his teammates were involved as well, Reavis was in the forefront of an impromptu danceoff, rap battle and drumline freestyle.

"My mom always said I was the class clown," he said with a smile. "I guess I just like the attention."

Reavis has also caught the attention of defensive coordinator Bud Foster and defensive backs coach Torrian Gray for his play on the field. Reavis began fall camp at free safety, but has since moved up to second-team nickel back.

There's no guarantee that Reavis will see the field this season and avoid a redshirt, but he's certainly put himself in the discussion.

"It's just my instincts and I think I pick up the stuff pretty fast," Reavis said. "When I don't, I make a play of just being there, in the right place at the right time. But Coach Gray and Coach Foster are some of the best coaches in America, so it's been a blessing just learning from them."

Reavis admits that there was an adjustment period, both to college and to playing nickel, as he played mostly safety in high school. But if Reavis continues to excel at his current rate, he could be at the forefront of the Hokies' defense sooner rather than later.

"With nickel, I'm in the box more," he said. "I can commit to plays and we're not that deep at nickel, so I can maybe get some playing time.

"My outlook is just that if Coach Gray and Coach Foster trust me enough, they'll put me in. If not, it's in their plans. They know what they're doing."
