Loeffler Awaiting Starting QB

Less than two weeks from Virginia Tech's season-opener, the offense has showed a number of positive aspects. A few big decisions, though, have yet to be made.
Offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler is taking a number of factors into consideration in who his starting quarterback might be, but he hasn't made the final decision. At this point, it's a two-horse race, between senior Mark Leal and Texas Tech junior transfer Michael Brewer.
After yesterday's closed scrimmage, in which the Hokies completed 14 of 36 passes for 202 yards, a quarterback hasn't set himself apart as the clear starter. But even as the race goes on, Loeffler is waiting for the right guy to emerge.
"I don't care if you're a redshirt, I don't care if you're the third-team guy," Loeffler said. "To develop and to do the things that you wanna do when you're number is called, you've gotta act like you're the starter from the day you walk in the door. Mark's improved in that area and Michael has been well-schooled and that's what he brings. He's acted like he's the starter every day."
A decision could come at any time over the next week and a half. But Loeffler wants to make sure he's naming the right player as his starter.
"We wish we would'be been able to get this thing over fast, but it's been a great competition, which is good," Loeffler said. "I think Mark has played much, much better. I mean, much better. Obviously, Michael brings an element of experience. He comes from a throwing-type of system and gets it. We'll evaluate the tape."
