Virginia Tech completed one its season schedules today by announcing a home and home series with Purdue. The Hokies will travel to Purdue in 2015, while the Boilermakers will play in Blacksburg in the 2023 season.
With Purdue, Virginia Tech will now has five future series with teams from the Big Ten Conference. The others are Ohio State (2014-15), Wisconsin (2019-20), Michigan (2020-21) and Penn State (2022-23).
In school history, the Hokies have only played three Big Ten members, Michigan, Indiana and Nebraska. Virginia Tech's games against the Cornhuskers though, in 1996, 2008 and 2009, all came when Nebraska was a member of the Big 12 Conference.
With the 2015 schedule now completed, the Hokies will open the season on Labor Day hosting Ohio State (Sept. 7), then host Furman (Sept. 12), before traveling to Purdue (Sept. 19. The game at East Carolina has been pushed back to Sept. 26 to accommodate the Boilermakers on the schedule.
Despite having never played Purdue, Virginia Tech has a few connections. Newly named president Timothy Sands was previously at Purdue, where he's the academic affairs and a provost. He'll officially take his new position in Blacksburg next summer.
Former wide receivers coach Kevin Sherman also spent this past season on the Purdue staff in the same position. He'd been on the Hokies' staff for the previous seven years and is from nearby Radford, Va.
