Righting The Hokies' Wrongs

For three games in a row, senior quarterback Logan Thomas had not thrown an interception. He began the season with six interceptions in the first four games.
A combination of things led to Thomas getting away from the recent progress he'd made and now he'll have to make quick corrections. Virginia Tech travels to Boston College Saturday, a team that's played the Hokies tough but also in the noon timeslot that they've lulled through the past few seasons.
The good thing is Thomas has a handle of what went wrong.
"It wasn't really that I was skipping (progressions) or not doing them," he said at today's weekly press conference. "I was going through them too fast. My footwork and my brain wasn't really gelled together, which means I was looking at two when my feet were still ready for one. That's what kinda got me off my game."
Virginia Tech has been off its game as a whole in the early time slot, which it has Saturday. But through experience, the Hokies hope to guard against any type of overall letdown.
"You just have to come out ready to play," senior defensive tackle Derrick Hopkins said. "When you wake up, you have to have your mind focused and ready to just come out there and win the game and play the best game you can play. There's no secret to it, you just have to wake up just ready to go, ready to play."
Thomas is hoping to avoid a repeat letdown himself. Offensively, Virginia Tech was able to move the ball, gaining 387 total yards of offense. But that stalled more times than not when the Hokies reached the red zone or close to it. Thomas isn't sure of the source of the problem, but he hopes to have it resolved soon for Virginia Tech to finish the season strong.
"I don't think it's really anything you can pinpoint," he said. "This past weekend, we had a touchdown but it was called back. We got to the red zone. It's one of those games where you don't have to get too crazy. You can kick a field goal and it's it gonna put you in a position to win it. Things didn't work out our way and it's just one of those things that from now on, we have to do our job the entire time, even when we get inside the red."
