Spring Game Tune-Up

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer has just two more times to see his players in action this spring. After a light practice tomorrow, the Hokies will host their annual spring game at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Today, Beamer got one more look at his team in game situations with a closed scrimmage. There was good and bad as expected, but Beamer also got a few thoughts from today on how he'd like the spring game and what he'll be looking for.

The star of today's scrimmage could have easily been running back Trey Edmunds, who rushed for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns on nine carries. Still, he not he nor the rest of the running backs have nailed down a position on the depth chart.

"I think we are closer," Beamer said. "I don't think it has to be exact because we've got time in pre-season. I don't think we can work four tailbacks or five tailbacks at one position. I think they have different roles that they fit within the offense. Who's the two or three best tailbacks and then work from there where they fit in after that."

Defensively, there were three sacks today, one apiece by J.R. Collins, Ken Ekanem and Davion Tookes, but Beamer also liked what he saw on special teams. Kicker Cody Journell nailed a pair of field goals over 46 yards, the longest from 55 yards.

Tomorrow, Virginia Tech will figure out just how the teams will be divided for the spring game. Beamer isn't sure if the Hokies will play 10 or 12-minute quarters, but what he does hope to see is a better look at how Virginia Tech will look Aug. 31 for the season-opener against Alabama.

"Number one, it's good execution and great effort," Beamer said. "You don't like sloppy spring games. We're probably gonna keep our one offense and one defense together as a team. Probably spot some points to the seconds and what I'd really like to see is go down to the fourth quarter, be close and somebody's gonna win it or lose it in the fourth quarter. It might be a kick or it might be a two-minute operation or whatever."
