In our series of stories from you, our viewers, HokieHaven.com subscriber Mr. Hokie To You recalls his first game at Lane Stadium in 1999.
My first game that I can remember going to was the Syracuse beat down in 1999. I was 15 and in complete awe.
But we left at halftime because the score was so lopsided. I Went to the Miami game that year also. And the finale against Boston College. Got there early and talked trash to Chris Hovan while he was warming up.
I went to about every home game from 1999-2005. The Marshall game in 2002 was pretty fun. I almost caused a riot with Marshall fans and their band. They didn't like me very much. But the cops thought I was funny.
The Syracuse game though, was my first.
I went with my cousin and his girlfriend and it was last minute. I think they called me last and of course I wanted to go.
I knew the stadium would be big and there'd be alot of people. But when you first walk in and see all the people it's kind of overwhelming. I have anxiety problems and don't like large groups of people but it didn't bother me like I thought it would.
I didn't eat anything there. My grandma always made me eat before I went somewhere. No good food stories. But my cousin's fiance always had moonshine. We had to partake in that. Especially during cold games.
I just so happened to be standing near Skipper when it fired the first time of many times that night. Scared the crap out of me.
I had a great time but like I said we left at halftime because the score was lopsided and my cousin didn't wanna be caught in any traffic. So I had to go but I wanted to stay.
That was a great year. Radford High school was all Hokie gear Monday-Friday. Half the time in class we talked about the team and especially Michael Vick. He was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Just wish we could have won the title. The only bummer about that year.
