Oregon State locks up local 2013 point guard
L.J. Westbrook, the intriguing guard is off the board.Just as high major programs were starting to get a feel for
A class of 2013 prospect from Salem (Ore.) North Salem High, the 6-foot-3 point guard committed to Oregon State on Thursday.
"Oregon State seemed like not just a good but the best fit for L.J after we looked around the campus and met with the coaches," said Westbrook's mother Eva. "We just went down and took a visit before school started."
A long and lanky floor general who gets to the rim and is a natural scorer, Westbrook had started to generate some buzz. Playing with Team Jones, Westbrook gained notoriety during the latter part of July and Oregon State made sure they locked him down quickly.
"They've come to all of LJ's aau games, 100 percent," said Mrs. Westbrook. "He's gotten calls from other schools but Oregon State is close to home and he has history there. His dad James played there.
"They've already made him feel like family."
Although he's still two years from arriving on campus, Oregon State was able to sell Westbrook and his family on a chance to play to go along with the proximity to home and family ties.
"He's a point guard and I think he'll have a big role in the coming years," said the three-star prospect's mother. "I think they'll have a spot for him. They didn't promise him any playing time or anything like that but they think he can make a big impact."
