There is no place like home and the 8th-ranked Washington State University Cougars' men's hoop team can attest to that. After opening Pac-10 conference play with three consecutive road games, Wazzu finally returned to Pullman for their conference home opener and promptly dispatched the Oregon State Beavers with a 69-46 win at Beasley Coliseum. The Cougars were led by 17 points from junior center Aron Baynes and 15 points from senior guard Derrick Low. The win improves the Cougars to 15-1 overall and 3-1 in Pac-10 play.

The Cougars were again sluggish coming out of the gate, allowing Oregon State twin Tarvers Seth Tarver and Josh Tarver to shoot a combined seven-of-eight to account for 18 of the Beavers' first half points. Thanks to the Tarvers' twos and treys, Oregon State was able to stay close for most of the half until Wazzu began gradually pulling away. Points came from all positions on the court - but mostly from "Big Daddy Baynes and senior guards Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver. "Big Daddy" led the way with nine points on 60% shooting from the field and 75% from the line [he was the only Cougar to attempt free throws in the half - going three-for four]. Low and Weaver added seven points apiece as WSU opened up a 34-24 lead at the break.

Wazzu opened the second half with a 7-0 run fueled by five points from Low and two more by Baynes, forcing the Beavers to call a timeout before the media timeout, when they reached a 17-point deficit. But it was too late to stop the Big Daddy Low Show as both Baynes and Low worked the Beavers inside-out in building an insurmountable 27-point lead at 55-28. From that point, the Cougars put it on cruise control and kept the margin in double digits for the rest of the way. Meanwhile, defensively, the Tarvers were held in check as the Cougars did not allow them to score a point nor take a single shot in the first 10 minutes of the half - and the duo only accounted for four points in the second half.

Late game action was also seen by redshirt freshman Thomas Abercrombie, who hit a three-pointer for the first Pac-10 points of his career.

With the win, the Cougars have now won three straight against the Beavers.

The Cougars will next play Oregon at 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 20 at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman.
