It's been a string of losses for coach James Johnson and Virginia Tech that's now reached eight straight. The Hokies have lost 10 of their last 11 as well.
And today, Johnson and his team had a new spectator.
After being announced as Virginia Tech's new director of athletics Wednesday, Whit Babcock took in the game from press row. Babcock said at his press conference that he wanted to make an overall evaluation before making any decisions and today was his first in-person and up close look at his men's basketball team.
But Johnson said he wasn't affected by the new presence.
"My job is to try to get these guys to play as well as they can play and get them prepared for the games," he said. "This one and the next one and the ones past, that's my job. I've gotta get these guys to play as well as we can play and try to figure out a way we can get better and move forward."
Johnson and the Hokies are sure finding it tough to even get close to a win. Today's loss was Virginia Tech's third in a row by at least 20 points.
"We're not competing for 40 minutes and I'm not sure if we've got the gas in our tank to compete for 40 minutes," Johnson said. "It's tough, it's very tough and frustrating for me to look down the bench and see three potential starters that are down there in suits. They're looking like me, they can't help us much dressed the way I'm dressed."
