Despite playing the first three minutes Tuesday against Furman, senior forward Cadarian Raines never saw the floor again for Virginia Tech the rest of the game. Friday against Radford, Raines didn't even get in the game.
Coach James Johnson dis-spelled the notion that Raines refused to go back in the game against Furman. But now, he's without two of his players expected to have an impact this season. Freshman Ben Emelogu has sat out the past two games with what Johnson calls, "concussion-like symptoms."
Emelogu suffered a concussion last month and hit his head again against Seton Hall. Johnson said Emelogu is questionable to play tonight against Winthrop, but whether or not Raines plays is up to Johnson.
"Am I disappointed?" Johnson said yesterday. "No, I think he's still gonna be an integral part of what we're doing this year up front. He's teaching those guys, he's talking to them in practice and they teach each other, actually, talking to each other. He'll come around and we're gonna need him, whether it's foul trouble or injuries, we're gonna need him."
Johnson said he's content for the moment to give more minutes to freshman forward Trevor Thompson, as well as sophomore forward Joey Van Zegeren. Raines isn't out of the mix yet, but Johnson said he needs to see more out of him.
"Just like I tell all the other guys, you've gotta compete," Johnson said. "You've gotta play hard, you've gotta compete and you've gotta beat those guys out. That's kinda my message to all the guys."
