Virginia Tech might be through 11 games now, but it's still impossible to figure this team out.
The Hokies won six in a row, lost two games to middle of the pack ACC teams and then pulled off one of the biggest upsets in school history last week at Miami. With everything to lose, Virginia Tech did just that, falling 27-24 in overtime to Maryland on senior day.
This is the same Terrapins team that was beaten 20-3 at home last week to Syracuse. And in that game, quarterback C.J. Brown rushed for five yards on 15 carries. Talk about a transformation to NFL hall of famer Steve Young. Or at least, that's how the Hokies made him look.
Brown, who's been oft-injured this season, rushed for 122 yards and a pair of touchdowns, on 23 carries. That included the winning touchdown run from three yards in overtime.
A week after everything seemed to go right for Virginia Tech on offense, not much did against the Terps. The Hokies had just 210 yards passing and 54 yards rushing. It's a step back for a team that was in prime position to be in the ACC Championship game.
Those hopes are quite distant now. Virginia Tech will be bowling for sure this season, but their bowl choice won't be as enticing. There's also the annual rivalry at Virginia in two weeks in which the Hokies hope to continue their winning streak over the Cavaliers.
Not much Virginia Tech can do besides watch the film, learn from mistakes and move on.
