It looked like a few mishaps at East Carolina were as low as Virginia Tech senior kicker Cody Journell could go.
A week later, it got a bit lower for Journell. After an undisclosed violation of team rules, Journell was suspended for Saturday's triple-overtime win over Marshall. Following the game, coach Frank Beamer read a brief statement about Journell's suspension, but refused to comment further.
Today, Journell made a brief apology, but he too, refused to talk much further.
"I made a mistake," he said. "I'm sorry for it. I wanna apologize to the coaches and players and my family, everybody that supported me. But I'm back this week and everything's gonna be fine."
Now that he's returned, Journell said he feels fine about his kicking ability. He missed three field goals and an extra point in a win over the Pirates. Journell said he made all of the field goals he attempted in practice today.
"I kinda just got shook after a little bit," he said of the misses. "It was kinda like a golf swing. Coach Beamer uses that analogy all the time, but once you mess up and you try to fix one little thing, it just compounds after that and it gets worse. That's kinda what happened."
Whatever the problem was, Journell insists it's all in the past, including his suspension.
"We already dealt with it before the game," Journell said. "After that, it was over, so it's back to football."
