It might have been a disappointing season overall for Virginia Tech, but it was a great individual season for junior linebacker Jack Tyler.
Tyler was named to the Coaches All-ACC Football Team by the league's coaches, while junior defensive end James Gayle and junior cornerback Antone Exum were each named to the second-team. Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd was named the player of the year.
Through the Hokies' 12 games this season, Tyler, a former walk-on, has a team-high 112 tackles and 11 for loss. He also has 2.5 sacks. Tyler's tackles are the most a Virginia Tech player has had in a season since Xavier Adibi's 115 in 2007.
Gayle has also had a big season, with five sacks and 10 tackles for loss, both second-best on the team. He also has 40 tackles.
Exum might be most noted for his interception of Virginia quarterback Michael Rocco late in the Hokies' 17-14 win over the Cavaliers Nov. 24 that set up their game-winning field goal as time expired. Exum has a team-high four interceptions on the season, to go with 47 tackles, 1.5 for loss, two forced fumbles and a recovery.
Virginia Tech is currently 6-6 and will play Rutgers Dec. 28 in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Fla. The Hokies are playing in a bowl game for the 20th straight season, but also need a win to have a winning record for that many seasons as well.
